[JLH]JUSTIN LEE HODGES

Words for a Grave

There's a short way to go and a long time to get there
I've just arrived but know I'll be leavin' soon
I'm stuck here standing at the door
Fighting my father's war
I've been trying to fill this suitcase since the age of eighteen
There just ain't enough room to fill or money to go around

I guess
Can't buy what I need to be full
My veins are always thirsty
I'm so hungry but never learned to cook
I could never find my way around the grain

So many stuck here inside a frame
Across from the kitchen are skeletons and bones
There's a bold man in a tattered hat crossing the crooked, empty street
Catering to his smoke and pride
A river of regret welling up inside
He's headin' to the liar's chair seeking to fill his cup

A strange brew of black
Bitter, hot and stiff
He'll fill it to the brim and spill it on the floor

We cast these burdens to the wall among the other side
Since the beginning of our homegrown sins
We've come no closer to the river
Nor has any window become clearer
We live and run
Looking for a worthy sentence before we're done
To fill the space upon our stone
To lie about the things we've won
